Following a short AGM, James Wright will speak on Mediaeval Landscapes: Beyond the Castle Gate .

The talk, “Medieval Landscapes: Beyond the castle gate”, will use contemporary art alongside documentary sources and archaeology to unpick the world of high status parks and gardens in the Medieval & Early Modern periods. Whilst ostensibly providing food for the tables of castles and great houses, parks and gardens also had a highly symbolic and ritual element to play in Mediaeval life. This related to a careful stage-management of the natural world to establish landscapes of lordship projecting status and power over the kingdom.

Dr James Wright, of Tiskele Heritage, is an award winning archaeologist, accredited lecturer and author, with over 20 years experience in the world of archaeology. He has worked in several areas of the heritage sector with experience as a field archaeologist, conservation stonemason, community archaeologist, historic stone specialist, archival researcher, historic graffiti specialist and buildings archaeologist. He did his doctoral research on Tattershall Castle, Lincolnshire.

James has also worked with a number of film and television broadcasts including Time Team and The Great British Dig

The lecture will be followed by the usual tea/coffee and cake and all sensible Covid precautions will be observed.
