Gunthorpe Hall Gardens are usually open once a year in March, mainly for the extensive display of daffodils and the splendid views of Rutland seen from the garden. The latter, perhaps, is one of our main reasons for going.
The garden is very much a work in progress: the stable yard, for example, has become a parterre. The owner thought we may be able to offer professional advice re future developments, but I said we could not do this, but felt that he would get plenty of opinions from the group. This will be the first time that the gardens have been open, except for the Yellow Book. The date has had to be postponed a couple of times so I only hope that with the mild, wet weather there may still be some remnants of the daffodils a few of us saw in March last year.
Five distinct areas – park-like lawn with mulberry, cherry and lime trees and summer border; lawn to ha-ha with southerly panorama and new tulip border; croquet lawn with herbaceous and late-summer borders; large kitchen garden and long border; old orchard planted with extensive drifts of daffodils. Fountains and 8 formal parterres enclosed by the dwellings that comprise the former Stable Yard.
Accessibility: Gravel path allows steps to be avoided.
Cost: £9 (Includes tea and cake).
