Kiftsgate Court Gardens (Grade ll*) is one of the finest gardens in the Midlands, created by 3 generations of female gardeners. We had hoped to go last year, but it proved too expensive. This year we hope it will be a more attractive proposition as no refreshments are included. There is, however, a tearoom for the inevitable tea and cake. We suggest bringing a packed lunch that can be eaten on the coach, as picnics are not permitted in the gardens.

The house was built in the late nineteenth century, on a magnificent six-acre site surrounded by three steep banks, the garden largely created by the present owner’s grandmother after WWl. Her work was continued by her daughter, Diany Binny, who made a few alterations but followed the same colour schemes in the borders. Her daughter, Anne Chambers, continues to perfect her vision. June and July are the best months for colour and scent, but the magnificent old and species roses are the stars of this garden, home of Rosa filipes ‘Kiftsgate’. In contrast the water garden, the latest edition, is surrounded by green hedges, with beautiful reflections in its black waters. There are also stunning views from the lower lawn, with its pool, across the Vale of Evesham to the Malvern Hills.

Walking shoes are advised as the paths can be steep, uneven and sometimes slippery.

This really is a garden worth seeing and what’s more, the plants they sell are outstanding.
