Meet between the two lodges, on either side of the Victoria Park gates, facing onto London Road. It is suggested that you park in the car park for Victoria Park, entrance off Granville Road. (LE1 7RY) The Car Park is Pay and Display and charges are £1 per hour.
This year’s guided walk will be conducted by our Chairman Stephen Barker, who will take us back in time as we walk down New Walk, from the Victoria Park gates to Welford Place.
New Walk was created in 1785, by the Leicester Corporation, as a promenade from the centre of Leicester to the racecourse on what is now Victoria Park. It is a rare survivor of a Georgian Promenade which, despite the changes in the town, remains today an attractive tree lined walk in the centre of the city.
The length of New Walk is approximately 1 mile, and the walk will last 60 to 75 minutes. The walk back up New Walk will take about 15 to 20 minutes at a reasonable pace.
Afterwards Elizabeth is offering tea and cake at her house, 51 Elms Road, Leicester, LE2 3JO. This is a 5-10 minute drive from Victoria Park.
