We had hoped to revisit Anglesey Abbey and Cambridge Botanic Garden for our first visit next year, but logistically it didn’t work out, hence our return to Easton Walled Garden. A visit there is always worthwhile and there’s the added advantage of a good pub lunch at the Cholmeley Arms in Burton-le-Coggles.
This will be our third visit to Easton Walled Gardens. Our first visit was in the very early days of the Gardens Trust, it was July, own transport, we went to Grimesthorpe first, it poured with rain all day and only half the group made it to Easton Walled Garden. On the second visit in Winter 2010 it snowed, it was magical and one of those visits that everyone remembers.
Easton Walled Garden is a 400-year-old, 12 acre garden set in the heart of Lincolnshire. Easton Hall, the original house, was demolished in 1951 and the garden was abandoned and fell into total disrepair. Since 2001, Ursula and Fred Cholmeley have restored this ancient garden from an overgrown wilderness to the nationally important garden it once was.
The restoration continues year on year with innovative new planting schemes creating gardens for all seasons. One of the highlights is snowdrop week in February, hence our visit, when we can enjoy, not only snowdrops, but other winter bulbs and plants.
This is a delightful winter garden to visit and for those who do not know it a surprise awaits.
