Hodsock Priory itself is not open to the public, but it has one of the most beautiful winter gardens in England. Snowdrops, cyclamen and aconites are everywhere in the 5 acre garden. spreading through the borders, in the grass and under the trees. The display in the snowdrop wood is astonising. Reflected in the lake are coloured stems of cornus, willow and sweet smelling hedges of sarcococca and avenues of winter honeysuckle. We are in for a treat.
The 3800 acre park at Clumber was enclosed from Sherwood Forest in the 18th centry and the garden was largely the creation of the Earl of Lincoln in the 2nd half of that century. He landscaped the park, laid out the pleasure grounds, serpentine walks and shrubberies and commissioned 2 temples and a bridge for the lake, which remains today. A 2 mile long lime avenue was planted in 1838. There is a Charles Barry stable block with clock tower and an ornate gothic chapel by GF Brodley, this has become the focus of the garden since the great house was demolished in 1938. The main interest of our visit will be the extensive glass houses. At 138m in length, these are the longest belonging to the National Trust. The Head Gardener will show us round.
